Tianchi, “Lake of the Heaven”, indicating its extraordinary beauty, is in the Changbaishan Mountain (Ever-White Mountain).
The lake is formed from volcano eruptions in ancient times with 5 kilometers from north to south, 3.5 kilometers from east to west, and 13 kilometers in circumference. It is surrounded by jagged rock outcrops and peaks; three rivers run off the lake, with a rumbling 68-meter waterfall - the source of Songhua and Tumen Rivers. The average depth of it is 204 meters, but at its deepest point it plunges to a depth of 373 meters, being the deepest lake in China and a lake which divides China and Korea. With its crystal clear water, the Tianchi Lake is the color of green jade and surrounded by steep hills. Its placid surface reflects the trees, slopes and the sky and forms a scene of natural splendor. However, visitors are lucky to have an entire view of the lake, because it's usually obstructed by mist and clouds. In the winter, thick ice covers the lake. Several hot springs spurt from the bottom of the lake and form hot spring zones. Ice and misty hot springs coexist in the same season and create a magical scene.
Tianchi not only is the most attracted scenery in north-eastern China, but also has many legends in its deep water.
