Sep. 28th, 2006 is Confucius’s 2,557th Birth Anniversary, at his hometown Qufu in East China's Shandong Province 2,557 people including Zhou Tienong, vice-chairman of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference, and senior officials from Taiwan Province, attended the ceremony. Attended by about 200 Confucianism scholars, amateur researchers of Confucian classics from across China and six foreign countries including Poland, Russian, Japan, South Korea, Australia and the United States and at least 1,500 local citizens.
Confucius’s social and political philosophical system, introduced to Europe in the late 16th and early 17th centuries by the Jesuit missionary Matteo Ricci, transcends the spiritual and intellectual divide between East and West.
As a birthday gift to this extraordinary master, we stop to remember just a few of his proverbs and courtesy:
In a country well governed, poverty is something to be ashamed of.
Look at the means which a man employs, consider his motives, observe his pleasures. A man simply cannot conceal himself!
Ability will never catch up with the demand for it.
Faced with what is right, to leave it undone shows a lack of courage.
An oppressive government is more to be feared than a tiger.
Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.
He who speaks without modesty will find it difficult to make his words good.
