The reserve covers an area of 4,660 hectares; of which the heart area is 1,463.3 hectares, with the tourist resort of 1,394.2 hectares. In the natural reserve are abundant resources of wild animals, luxuriant vegetation, over 180 kinds of vertebrates and more than 700 species of vascular bundles, as well as over 50 hectares of relatively well-preserved natural Chinese pines. In the Jiaqing reign of the Qing Dynasty, there was a table inscription of "Green pines and cypresses and darkness over the sky". Today, in spring and autumn when hundreds of flowers are in full bloom and birds and sparrows contend, everywhere is a scene of nature's vitality.
The Songshan Mountain Tourist Resort mainly consists of rich and unique natural sights. In the resort are the Haituo Mountain being the second tallest peak in Beijing, and over 30 scenic spots including natural Chinese pines, 100 waterfall springs, the Eight-Immortal Cave, Pine Moon Pool, Lion Drinking Water, Gold Toad Watching the Moon and Flying, Dragon Cliff each has their own feature.
The Songshan Mountain Tourist Resort has typical mountain climate. It is pleasant because its sea level and little topography is one of the low-temperature areas in Beijing, with an average temperature of around 7.4℃ lower than the urban area and 2.9℃ lower than Chengde.
The Songshan Mountain Natural Reserve is ideal for scientific research and investigation, on-the-spot teaching and practicing as well as for tours, vacations, summer holidays, convalescence, writing poems, painting and enjoy nature's charm. After several years of opening up and construction, it has conditions for lst-2nd-and 3rd-class catering and accommodation.
