Potala Palace stands aloft of Red Hill in Lhasa, Tibet. It is reputed as “pearl on the world roof”.
Potala Palace is the winter palace of the Dalai Lamas of all times, and the governing center of the former rulers of Tibet, both political and religious. Since the 5th Dalai Lama, all important religious and political ceremonies were held here. Kept in the palace are the imperial edicts of entitlement by emperors of Ming and Qing Dynasties, seals, gold album and jade album, handicrafts, sutras, and all kinds of books, as well as the funerary stupa of the deceased Dalai Lamas.
Potala Palace is the masterpiece of Tibetan buildings and the gem of ancient Chinese architecture. The palace integrates with the hill, standing aloft with grandeur and majesty. The walls alternating in red and white, the golden roofs shining with brilliance, it demonstrates in full the appealing charm of ancient Tibetan buildings. It is not only the symbol of the creativity of Tibetan people, but also the unique cultural heritage of human beings on this high and snowy plateau.
