Feb. 14th , the Valentine’s Day, is familiar by most Westerners. In fact, there is also such a festival in China.
It is said that a long time ago, a clever and honest man named Niu Lang, a herd-boy was living in the Niu village at the west of Nanyang city. His parents died when he was young and he had to live with his brother and sister-in-law. His brother’s wife treated him terribly. At last, she drove Niu out of her family, then he lived with an old cow. One day the cow told Niu that the seven daughters of Yuhuang Dadi( the Heaven) would come to bathe on the earth, and the youngest one named Zhi Nu, Weaving-girl was the smartest, if he hid her clothes she would be his wife. Niu followed the cow’s instructions and married Zhi Nu and they led a happy life, later they gave birth to a son and a daughter. Unfortunately, the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens was very angry about their behavior and forced Zhi Nu to return to the heaven. With just one wave of the hairpin, the Queen Mother of the Western Heavens separated the two lovers at each bank, that’s said to be the origin of the Milky Way. They could only meet on the July 7th of the lunar calendar in every year. And this is also the origin of Double Seventh Day.
