Kunming, the capital of Yunnan Province, is one of the nation's 24 historic and cultural cities designated by the State Council in 1982.It was built in 765 A.D. and called Tuodongcheng. It was named Kunming in the Yuan Dynasty (1271-1368) and has since become the political, economic and cultural center of Yunnan Province. The annual temperature averages 14.5 degrees centigrade. The temperature averages 19.7 degrees centigrade in the hottest month, and 7.5 degrees centigrade in the coldest month. The annual precipitation reaches 1,035 millimeters, the frost-free period lasts for 227 days, the annual sunshine totals 2,448.7 hours, and the average relative air humidity is 74%. Such a climate is suitable for the growth of plants and flowers.

  Kunming is known as a city of spring because its weather is usually like February and March and flowers are found in all seasons.Situated in central Yunnan, surrounded by mountains and located on the northern tip of Lake Dian, Kunming is China's southwestern oasis.  Endowed with a mild climate, neither too hot nor too cold, ornamental flower arrangements pleasantly dot the city; displaying over 400 different flower species.  The Kunming Botanical Garden houses over 4000 species of tropical and subtropical plants.  Kunming is an ancient city, with over 2000 years of history.  Historically it was a gateway to the Silk Road, being a crucial junction point for Tibetan, Burmese, Indian and Sichuan trade.  Today it serves much the same purpose but for a different array of goods; mostly agricultural and natural resource related. .Kunming serves not only as the provincial center of Yunnan but also as the destination for its snowballing tourism with so many places of interest spread all around the city. Among these dramatic sites, Yunnan Stone Forest , which is about 120 kilometers (75 miles) from Kunming city and requires only a three-hour drive, is known best by the tourists.
