Adventure Tourism Blooms in China

While summer is still going strong and the weather stays hot day after day, a new trend of participating in adventure tourism has been grabbing the attention of Chinese tourists.
Adventure tourism includes going through the desert by car, traversing mountains and rivers on foot, challenging the extreme limits of strength and courage, and finding joy through unfamiliar, mysterious and breathtaking experiences.
Over the years, adventure tourism has gradually become a modern industry. Especially in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, adventure tourism is attractive to a soaring numbers of tourists. According to raw statistical results, in Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, the number of domestic tourists hailing from everywhere around China could reach 50-70 thousand each year.
This summer, some routes of adventure tourism were well-designed and promoted by the Xinjiang Tourism Administration. The Silk Road, Tianshan Mountains, Takla Makan desert, Lop Nor Lake and other famous, enthralling, and spectacular sights are all included on adventure tourism routes.
The setup for adventure tourism trips varies. Some take private vehicles for individual adventures, some rent cars to get into remote areas, while others, usually more professional people, organize a group with the help of the Internet, and set off to challenge more difficult adventure routes like the Ancient Cliff Roads and the Glaciers of the Tianshan Mountains.
As an immediate result of the boom in adventure tourism, the business of outdoor sports facilities and adventure tourist rescue teams are developing rapidly. Statistics have revealed that up to now, more than 30 shops offering outdoor sports facilities have opened in Urumqi, the capital city of Xinjiang Uygur Autonomous Region, and more than 90% of tourist companies running adventure tours have established rescue teams for emergencies.
When it comes to the underlying social motives for this blooming of adventure tourism, an official from China Travel Service (Hong Kong) said that, along with the swift development of China's economy, people who are getting richer by the day can now afford the big expenses of adventure tourism. And these adventure tours feature utter freedom as well as scary surprises, a definite appeal for these individuals, especially the young and rich. Besides, people can learn the spirit of teamwork through these strenuous and challenging adventure experiences, and teamwork is highly valued in the modern work environment.
However, although adventure tourism is attractive and exciting, tourists should bear in mind the higher possibility of getting lost, trapped, or hurt, and should prepare thoroughly before setting out on the journey. Moreover, tourism administration authorities should strengthen the management of adventure tourism, and set series of standards for related companies to follow, so as to ensure the public's safety.
