Destination Yungang Grottoes in Datong

Yungang Grottoes in Datong, Shanxi Province was added to the list of World Heritage by united Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in December 2001.
With the wide spread of Buddhism in China in the second century AD, grotto art was introduced to China from India, developing rapidly in this century after the fourth century AD. Grottoes were carved in cliff faces in various places, particularly in North China. The best-known among them are the Dunhuang Grottoes in Shanxi Province. These are three major treasure troves of Buddhist art in China.
