On the nightfall of September 2nd, 1975, in the area of Langjiasha, Jiangsu province, there was a strange light appearing on the sea-surface. It continued to billow with a shape of burning flame until the dawn of the next day. It reappeared at the following five days’ evenings with brighter light than previous night. At the 7th day, September 8th, there was lots of foam gushing out the sea .The waves stirred by ships were extraordinary bright, with many peal-like shinning particles in them. Later that day, there was an earthquake on that area.
At the evening before the Tangshan Earthquake happened in July 1976, the seawater around Qinhuandao and Beidaihe there also appeared lighting waves.
This phenomenon of seawater emitting light is called “sea-fire”, which appeared before earthquake. About the formation of the “sea-fire”, most people believe that it is caused by the animals able to emit light in the sea. These animals will glow when being perturbed, which is widely confirmed. People speculate that when these animals are stimulated by the vibration caused by earthquake, these living things then produce bright light-“sea- fire”. But some scholars disagree with that point. They argue that why there is no “sea-fire” when there is great storm on sea, in which condition those living things also are vibrated by the rough water. The real reason causing the “sea-fire” is still researching by scholars and people are waiting for it.
