Located in the Kabuqi Desert at the southern tip of the Dalate Plain in Erdos, Inner Mongolia, the Singing Sand was given the name because the sand can sing different tunes, such as the singing of a folk song by a young lady, the galloping of horses or the sound of thunders. There are two other deserts famous for Singing Sand in China; one locates in the south of Duanhuang, Gansu province, and the other Wei Country, Ningxia. All of these singing sand deserts provide special experiences.
The phenomenon of sand making sound is common in the world. And there are more than one hundred singing sand palaces in varied deserts and beaches throughout the world. However, you’re missing one of life’s true joys if you haven’t been charmed by the evocative singing sands of China. Their enchanted music, Chinese romantics have said, is the sound of heaven.
People have studied on the formation of Singing Sand since recent decades with scientific methods. Scientists put forward various opinions on it after careful researches and experiments. Some believe it’s caused by the air motion between sands. Some think it’s caused by the resonance produced by the friction between sands with distinct surface structure. And also, some post that it’s caused by the change of sands’ density and temperature. But none of the theory can be applied to all the three singing sand palaces in China. When there will be a convincible answer to the formation of singing sand is uncertain, like a mystery.
